Esthéra-Mère

A staged cantata in four parts and a prelude. Poem by Agnès Eschinasi.

Discover the story

Prelude. Esthéra sits reading in her armchair while her son writes at his desk. Three soldiers enter and arrest the young man because of his writings.

1. Morning – Ice – Fire. Esthéra waits for the prison to open so she can visit her son, imprisoned for his opinions. She suffers from the cold, yet fire consumes her soul.

2. Water. Among the other waiting women, Esthéra dreams of water and coolness, then rebels against the denial of the freedom to speak and to be.

3. Air. Esthéra feels the wind of freedom. The prisoners proclaim their innocence and demand the freedom to create, while the jailers suppress them.

4. Night – Earth. Nature and time pass by, indifferent. Beyond despair, Esthéra calls for tenderness and love.
