The journey
A life of music
and encounters.
Born in Cherbourg, on the Cotentin peninsula, Gérard Legoupil composes for voices, instruments and the stage.
After his early studies at the Tourlaville music school, he entered the Caen regional conservatoire, where he studied analysis and harmony. He trained in singing and opera with Michel Hamel, earning a gold medal and a prize for excellence.
He studied choral conducting with Philippe Caillard and later Claire Marchand, and taught music in secondary schools in Bayeux. His encounter with Pierre-Max Dubois, winner of the Grand Prix de Rome, enabled him to refine his compositional technique.
With the poet Giovanni Di Maggio, he wrote around sixty songs. His collaboration with Agnès Eschinasi gave rise to works for the lyric stage, including Esthéra-Mère. He also composes choral and instrumental pieces, as well as musicals.
The city of Bayeux commissioned his Requiem pour un conquérant. He founded the Gunaïkes women's choir and conducted the Compagnie Lyrique in operettas at the Caen theatre.
Working with children's author Ann Rocard, he explored repertoire for young audiences, writing more than 250 songs and around fifteen musicals.
He conducts the Ensemble Vocal Mosaïque in Le Fuilet.
His catalogue includes Vents rebelles, Histoires d’enfant, Balade champêtre, Sur le chemin, whose version for cello and string orchestra was premiered on 31 July 2025, and La Fantaisie Ligérienne for flute and string orchestra, premiered on 1 August 2026 at the Beaugency Festival.
